Legal and Justice Support

Therapeutic support during legal and justice system experiences

Involvement with the legal or justice system can be emotionally challenging and overwhelming. Whether someone is preparing for court, navigating a legal process following a traumatic experience, or adjusting to life during or after imprisonment, these circumstances can have a significant impact on mental health and wellbeing.

At Poole Therapies, we offer confidential counselling for individuals affected by legal proceedings or justice system involvement, providing a safe and supportive space to explore emotions, process difficult experiences, and develop coping strategies during times of uncertainty.

Counselling focuses on emotional wellbeing and personal support during challenging circumstances.

Understanding the Emotional Impact of Legal Proceedings

Legal processes can bring uncertainty, stress, and emotional strain. Preparing for court, engaging with legal professionals, or waiting for outcomes can be particularly difficult experiences.

People involved in legal proceedings may experience:

  • Anxiety about court appearances or legal outcomes
  • Stress linked to investigations or ongoing legal processes
  • Emotional distress connected to giving evidence
  • Trauma related to the events surrounding a case
  • Feelings of fear, uncertainty, or loss of control

Counselling provides a confidential space to explore these feelings and develop ways to manage the emotional impact of legal proceedings.

Support for Survivors Navigating Legal Processes

For individuals pursuing legal action following abuse or trauma, the process itself can sometimes feel overwhelming. Recounting experiences, preparing statements, or participating in court proceedings may bring up difficult emotions.

Therapy can help individuals:

  • Process trauma within a safe and supportive environment
  • Manage anxiety and emotional distress linked to legal processes
  • Develop coping strategies for court preparation
  • Maintain emotional stability during a complex and stressful period

While counselling does not provide legal advice, it can offer valuable emotional support while individuals navigate the justice system.

Support Related to Prison and Custodial Experiences

Experiences connected to imprisonment or custodial environments can have a lasting emotional impact. Individuals may face challenges adjusting to life during or after custody, as well as navigating identity, relationships, and personal change.

Counselling may help individuals:

  • Process difficult experiences related to imprisonment or release
  • Explore identity and personal growth following justice system involvement
  • Develop healthier coping strategies
  • Strengthen resilience and emotional wellbeing

Family members of individuals affected by imprisonment may also experience emotional strain and may benefit from therapeutic support.

Specialist Experience in Justice and Custodial Contexts

Some of our therapists have experience supporting individuals whose lives have been affected by the justice system.

For example, Raushia has contributed to resilience and therapeutic programmes within the women’s estate at HMP Eastwood Park, working alongside organisations including The Forgiveness Project and Restore. These programmes focus on supporting women who have experienced significant trauma, including domestic abuse, violence, and social disadvantage.

This work emphasises trauma-informed practice, compassion, and emotional resilience, helping participants explore difficult experiences, develop healthier coping strategies, and strengthen emotional awareness.

A guiding principle within trauma-informed work is asking “What happened to you?” rather than “What is wrong with you?”, recognising the complex ways that life experiences can affect behaviour, wellbeing, and coping strategies.

A Confidential and Non-Judgemental Space

At Poole Therapies, we aim to provide a safe, respectful, and confidential environment where individuals can speak openly about their experiences without fear of judgement.

Counselling is guided by your needs and focuses on supporting emotional wellbeing and personal growth.

Please note that counselling does not provide legal advice or influence court proceedings, but can offer emotional support while individuals navigate challenging legal experiences.
